 History and foreign languages are my favorite academic subjects. I love history and how it illuminates scripture passages. We cannot understand the Bible without history. Along with a study of the original Greek or Hebrew texts, history is the key to understanding the scripture passages used to teach holiness "standards". In other words, a scholarly approach. It is imperative to study these scriptures in their historical and cultural context, rather than attempting to interpret them literally, almost word-for-word, within a modern day church setting.
